Abstract

The analysis of the trends in global health points to a growing disease burden, confirmed by the inability to meet the health related Millennium Development Goals, especially in the developing countries. This state of affairs has had a profound negative impact on economic development and quality of life. The rapid development and adoption of the mobile telephony technologies provides an opportunity to; enhance health care, make significantly contribution towards realization of health related MDGs (Goals 4, 5 and 6) and lowering of the disease burden in developing countries. The research sought to examine and assess the need, viability and potential for deploying of mHealth solutions in Kenya and the likely benefits. This was achieved by reviewing existing literature to establish health care challenges and disease burden in developing countries and in particular Kenya, review of documented successes of mobile phone related innovations and mHealth solutions in developing countries and assessing the prevailing environment Kenya and how this environment makes Kenya a prime candidate for deployment and use of mHealth solutions. The research established that there is a growing disease burden especially from preventable diseases and therefore an urgent need for suitable intervention that include exploring the potential for mHealth solutions. The existing environment in Kenya provides a head start for deployment and use of mHealth solutions.
