Abstract

With the emergence of smart grids, dynamic electricity pricing models show potential for reducing the environmental impact of energy generation and increasing the economic advantages, compared to the traditional fixed pricing schemes. However, manual following and responding to the price variations is considered challenging and ineffective for the end user. In this paper, an optimization-based residential load scheduling algorithm is proposed, aiming at minimizing the electricity expenses, as well as the inconvenience from shifting the appliances’ operation in time. A distributed communication approach is employed, in which the households and the energy provider exchange data about energy prices and consumption via packet switching communication network. The simulation results confirm that the proposed scheduling algorithm can reduce the end user’s energy expenses as well as the environmental impact of energy generation by closely following the renewable energy production curve.
