Abstract

This study was aimed to develop a movable barrier to protect road workers from the risk exposures of vehicles. Based on work zone types, we have conceived two movable barrier types, a large-sized and a small-sized. The large-sized barrier is for a high-speed highway and the small-sized one for a low-speed highway. Each type has the two different structures, respectively. The large barrier has the Folder and Telescoping, and the small the Energy-Absorbing-At-Center (E-AAC) and Energy-Absorbing-At-Backside (E-AAB). A simulation crashing test was conducted for each type to evaluate the occupant risk criteria (THIV(Theoretical Head Impact Velocity), PHD(Post-Impact Head Deceleration), ASI(Acceleration Severity Index)) of the Korean National Safety Barriers Guideline. The results showed that all the barriers designed in the study were successfully passed the simulated test given the safety criteria designated by Guideline for Safety Barrier.
